Both summer and winter, the Old Port of Montreal is filled with interesting, iconic spots. Tourists and residents, alike, can enjoy its beauty all year long, especially from one of the 42 capsules of La Grande Roue.

It comes as no surprise that the biggest Hollywood studios would choose the Old Port as a location for shooting some of their productions!

Harboring numerous historic buildings, the Old Port has become a backdrop of choice for a good number of local and foreign productions. The versatility of the scenery, with its mixture of urban and natural spaces, makes this a place as historical as it is modern.

Here are a few films and television series in which you’ll catch sight of the magical, chameleon-like setting that is the Old Port of Montreal.

 

X-Men: Days of Future Past (2014)

Here, fans of the X-Men franchise can see Vauquelin Square and the Montreal City Hall, situated just a stone’s throw from the Old Port. Numerous international stars, including Hugh Jackman and Jennifer Lawrence, have filmed scenes here.

The sites are briefly featured in the film’s trailer, as well. 

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (2008)

 

Here are a few films and television series in which you’ll catch sight of the magical, chameleon-like setting that is the Old Port of Montreal.

Several scenes that take place in Paris were also shot here. It seems that the diversity of the Old Port is appreciated as much by film studios as it is by tourists!

I’m Not There (2006)

In this film, inspired by the life of musician Bob Dylan, the Old Port is transformed into London.

In total, nearly 70 different places in Montreal are presented in this work starring Cate Blanchett and Richard Gere. And a good number of them can be seen from La Grande Roue, as well. You just have to pay attention!

Life of Pi (2012)

The final third of this film, directed by Ang Lee, takes place in Montreal. There, you’ll see the main character telling his story, seated on a bench in the Old Port. And if you look closely, you can even make out Notre-Dame Street. 

Jack Ryan (2018)

The first season of American television series Jack Ryan, adapted from the novels of Tom Clancy, was largely filmed in Montreal, including the Old Port.

The panoramic view, historic buildings and maritime setting of the Old Port make it a location of choice for filming, both in the daytime and in the evening.
To appreciate its charm, all you need to do is take a ride on La Grande Roue. After all, if Hollywood chose the Old Port of Montreal, why shouldn’t you?
